Krups is a German company with an incredibly long and successful history; they have been around since 1846. What is it that has helped this company thrive for over 160 years while so many others have failed? I think the answer lies in Krups dedication to making great products relevant in the marketplace at that time. They have never just stood still; they are always adding to the growing field of housewares products. Is the Krups toaster oven worthy of a company with such a long-standing reputation of innovation and quality?
To see how it measured up, I tested the Krups 6 slice digital convection toaster oven for two months, using it for almost all of my cooking. My usual toaster oven was banished to the garage for the duration of the review period, to make sure I would get the best idea of how this model performs with frequent use. Here is my review, plus you'll find my ratings for this toaster oven at the bottom of the page.
Upon first receiving the Krups toaster oven and removing it from the box, I was immediately struck by the solid, sturdy feel it has. It is certainly very well-constructed; no cheap parts on this toaster oven. The design is very pleasing, falling somewhere between modern and comfortable. It has the look of an expensive appliance without being overdone and making the rest of my kitchen look bad. This toaster oven will look great in any kitchen, regardless of the decor. The interior of the Krups 6 Slice Toaster Oven is very spacious, but because of the boxy rectangular shape it does not take up too much room on my countertop. I am certainly impressed so far.
My first meal consisted of two skin-on, bone-in chicken quarters drizzled with walnut oil and coated with herbs. I like how easy to use the controls are; there was really even no need to consult the user's manual. I found it a little odd that the settings only go in 5 degree increments, but I can't remember ever having to bake anything at 367 degrees so I don't think that will be an issue for me. The quartz convection heating elements heated up quickly and cooked the chicken very evenly. The skin turned out perfectly crispy without the meat being dry at all. This is a good sign that the heating elements are powerful enough. I was very pleased with the initial performance of the Krups 6 Slice Toaster Oven.
Throughout the next two months I used the Krups toaster oven for almost all of my meals in order to be able to provide a proper review. There was one single exception: I hosted a dinner party for six people and there just wasn't enough room to accommodate all I needed to cook that night. But on a daily basis the Krups 6 Slice Toaster Oven was all I needed. I was pleased to see just how spacious the cooking area is. Some of the bigger items I cooked included a twelve inch pizza, a beef eye of round roast and a whole chicken (the chicken was on the small side.) It all fit beautifully and cooked up perfectly.
During the review period I encountered no problems with the Krups 6 Slice Toaster Oven itself. It always heats up quickly and cooks things quickly and evenly. It is well insulated and holds the heat in well; something I am very grateful for on hot days. The only disappointment I found lies in the included baking pan. I followed the manufacturer's instructions and only hand-washed it yet the non-stick coating peeled off after only a month. I have other baking pans that I can use, so this didn't have too much of an adverse effect on me. Yet, I don't feel it is right for Krups to include such an inferior product in the package when they charge almost $300 for this toaster oven. All in all, I do love this toaster oven and am actually planning to leave my old one out in the garage.
