DeLonghi DO400 Digital

I recently tested the DeLonghi DO400 1400 watt 4 slice digital control toaster oven for three weeks. I did this so that I could write a detailed review to help anyone considering purchasing this toaster oven. I packed away my usual toaster oven and put it into storage for the review period and used only the DeLonghi toaster oven. I wanted to be sure to get a clear idea of how this toaster ovenn measures up with normal daily usage. Here is my review of the DeLonghi DO400 Digital Toaster Oven.

I decided to purchase this DeLonghi toaster oven for review after the cost was dropped by 50% from the original list price. The price for tis toaster oven at this time is only $42 including the shipping costs. That makes this DeLonghi model now the most inexpensive toaster oven you can buy that is equipped with digital controls. It is important to keep this low price point in mind when forming expectations for this toaster oven.

I took my new DeLonghi toaster oven out of the box and examined it. It has a modern, sleek appearance. The main body of the toaster oven has a black finish with stainless steel accents. The toaster oven has black push-buttons and a large digital display. The overall construction is a little thin, but actually good for its new, lower price range. There is an included baking pan with a broiling insert and a baking rack. The quality of the baking pans is pretty much what you ought to expect in this price range. The baking rack is rather sturdy and thick for this price range. There is no auto-eject, meaning the rack does not come out on its own when you open the door of the toaster oven.

This DeLonghi toaster oven is listed as a 4 slice unit, and it does actually fit 4 slices of bread quite nicely. There are seven options for toasting and the default toast setting is T4, so I decided to start there. I noticed the bread beginning to burn long before it was expected to be done. Subsequent toasting was always done on T1 (the lowest setting) because I found anything higher burns the toast. This toaster oven makes good toast at the low setting. One thing I must point out: the beeping alarm when your food is done is excruciatingly loud! I find this to be especially painful when I make my toast first thing in the morning before I have even had coffee. The beeping is so loud that I contacted DeLonghi to see if there is any way to adjust the sound. Sadly, there is not. It really is VERY loud, and that is something you will need to be prepared for if you are considering this toaster oven.

My first dinner in the DeLonghi toaster oven was baked chicken quarters. I set the temperature to 425 degrees F. It seemed that the chicken was cooking quicker than I am accustomed to, so I placed a digital thermometer into the oven. The actual temperature in the oven was 462 degrees F, quite a bit higher than what I set it at. I adjusted the temperature setting accordingly and my chicken ended up baked well. The heat was even, although higher than I set it for. I was happy that there was not a combination of burnt and raw spots, which is what you will sometimes get with the uneven heat of a cheap toaster oven.

I used the DeLonghi toaster oven for baked goods, such as cakes and cookies, many times throughout the review period. I found it baked evenly and consistently but almost always ran hot. I always leave a thermometer in the oven to monitor the actual temperature and adjust the settings as needed.

Overall, I was very pleased with the ability of this toaster oven to reach high enough temperatures to properly brown food. This is not always possible in models that cost less than $50. It is inconvenient to need to monitor the actual temperature and adjust the settings, but I got the hang of it after a while and I knew where my settings needed to be to achieve the results I was looking for. I initially thought I might have received a defective toaster oven, but after reading other reviews I saw having a higher than set temperature is a common problem with this model.

This may not be the best toaster oven out there, but I feel it is a good value for the exceptionally low price. My review would not have been so generous at the original price point of this toaster oven.
