The close proximity of the heating elements in a toaster oven make it the perfect place to broil burgers. Cooking times are approximate; they will vary based on the power and temperature of your toaster oven, as well as your personal doneness preference.
Burgers can be super fancy or simple and basic. We are giving you a basic, no-frills burger recipe to start your toaster oven burger making. You can add just about anything to your burger to personalize it; cheese would be the most popular option. Cheese should be added only for the last 30 seconds of cooking, any longer and you risk burning the cheese. You can also mix any number of flavorings into the meat mixture. A few popular options include garlic, onion granules, oregano, basil and crushed red pepper. You can also personalize your burger through toppings, such as grilled onions and/or mushrooms or roasted red peppers.
Ingredients for 4 basic quarter-pound burgers
1 pound of good quality ground beef, grass fed pasture raised beef is the healthiest option
1/4 teaspoon of sea salt
1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
4 sandwich buns, whole grain buns would be the healthiest choice
Combine the ground beef, sea salt and black pepper in a mixing bowl. Gently mix to combine. Separate into 4 even pieces. Form each into a round patty, about 1/4 of an inch think. Throughout the mixing and forming process, work the meat as little and as gently as possible. Overworking the meat will lead to a tough, undesirable texture in the finished burger.
Heat your toaster oven to the highest possible setting; on some units there will actually be a "broil" setting which will be the hottest. You have 3 options when choosing what to cook your burgers on. The first would be a non-stick cooking pan. The second would be a regular cooking pan lined with parchment paper. The third option would be to grease a regular cooking pan with the oil of your choice. The first two options will cook the burgers without any added fat or calories. The third option will add fat and calories, but produce a more browned burger which adds a lot to the flavor.
Choose your cooking pan set up and place the four burgers on the pan, evenly spaced out. Place the pan into the heated toaster oven. Cook for 2 to 4 minutes (depending on how hot your toaster oven gets and how well you like your burgers cooked.) Carefully flip the burgers over and rotate the pan, so that the burgers that were initially in the back are now in the front. This will ensure more even cooking. Cook the flipped burgers for an additional 2 to 4 minutes. Put the cooked burgers on the buns and enjoy!
